About This Book
In the opening decades of the 21st century, sweeping changes have enabled tens of thousands of companies to deliver manufactured products across nearly all continents. For many of these “global products,” the potential customer base exceeds one billion people. By 2007, Wall Street recognized the vast possibilities for growth and profitability. Yet the global stage presents complexity and heightened risks.
Companies must balance diverse requirements from international customers, select optimal locations for design and manufacturing, decide what should remain global versus localized, integrate effective processes and systems, comply with varying regulations, and coordinate work across distributed teams.
Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) has emerged as the worldwide standard for overseeing innovation, development, and long-term support of global products. PLM spans the entire lifecycle—managing a product from conception through to recycling and disposal.
Drawing on insights from executives at companies including ABB, Alcatel-Lucent, Dow Corning, and Siemens, Global Product outlines the new global environment, explores opportunities and obstacles, and distills best practices. It establishes essential rules for successful strategies, organizational structures, and implementation. The book also defines PLM’s objectives and key components.
