The Goodman Currency Codex By Michael Duane Archer
For more than 40 years, Michael Duane Archer has been involved in commodity futures and foreign exchange trading. He has worked as an SEC investment counselor, branch manager for Heinold of Hawaii, a private trader, and a registered CTA and CPO. Archer is regarded as an authority in the domains of artificial intelligence and complexity models used in trading, and he was among the first to conduct significant computer-based technical analysis research.
Using his unique Jonathan’s Wave expert system, he managed USD 20 million in commodity futures as a CTA in the 1980s. According to Managed Account Reports, he produced a 48% annual return with very low risk parameters and a high Sharpe ratio. This was the first instance of AI being successfully used in trading. Additionally, it gave rise to the phrase “algorithmic trading.”
The FOREX Chartist Companion (John Wiley & Sons, 2006), Trading the Major Pairs (John Wiley & Sons, 2006), Getting Started in Forex Trading Strategies (2007), Fifteen Essential FOREX Trades (John Wiley & Sons, 2009), and Getting Started in Currency Trading (John Wiley & Sons, 2005, 2008, 2010, 2012) are just a few of the books he has written or co-written.
He has contributed technical papers to a number of scholarly meetings, such as Automata 2008 (UK), the University of Chemnitz Conference on Machine Learning (1997), and the Chicago Symposium on Artificial Intelligence (1991). The Analytica part of this website has a copy of the Automata 2008 presentation, “A Simple Cellular Automata Model for FX Market Forecasting.”
For nearly 40 years, Archer’s “go-to” discretionary trading strategy has been the Goodman Wave Theory, created by trader extraordinaire Charles B. Goodman. Archer was the only person to learn “Charlie’s” techniques. The three books on Goodman Wave Theory and the Goodman Method of Trading that are now available from GoodmanWorks are a collection of articles on GWT, The Goodman CODEX, a treatise on his favorite Goodman setup, Trading the Goodman 6 & 6 Setup, and the Goodman Simple System Setup.
