From the Inside Flap
In recent years, turbulent markets have erased trillions from investors’ portfolios. Yet, others have used creative strategies to protect—and even grow—their wealth. Create Your Own Hedge Fund presents one such method, blending exchange traded funds (ETFs) with options. ETFs like DIAMONDs and VIPERS are gaining ground over mutual funds thanks to lower costs, greater flexibility, and, importantly for this strategy, their tradability on exchanges and eligibility for options. Writing options, meanwhile, can produce more winning trades, fewer losing ones, smaller drawdowns, and more stable returns.
This book merges the best features of ETFs and options into an accessible program that works in any market climate—bull or bear—and offers consistent, predictable performance. The approach is divided into four detailed parts:
-
PART I introduces the principles of Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT), discusses why MPT often prevents investors from beating the market, and explains how to capture hedge fund-like performance with reduced risk and cost.
-
PART II examines mutual funds versus ETFs, demonstrating why ETFs are often the better choice for most investors.
-
PART III breaks down the mechanics of options and option writing, showing why this supposedly risky technique can be safer than long-term buy-and-hold.
-
PART IV ties it all together, explaining how to build a core portfolio, select the right options to write, and providing real-world examples of the strategy in action.
Create Your Own Hedge Fund lays out a simple yet powerful plan for achieving hedge fund-style results—minus the huge minimum investment—while cutting back on portfolio volatility.
