Editorial Reviews
From the Inside Flap
Gary Smith was bitten by the trading bug at the age of fourteen, and ever since he’s thought of little else other than how to make a fortune as a home-based trader. He bought his first stock in 1966, when he was just a college sophomore, and then spent the next two decades unsuccessfully chasing his childhood dream. Finally, in 1985, nearly bankrupt and ready to quit, Gary Smith had an epiphany that changed everything-and since then he hasn’t had a losing year and rarely even a losing month. His trading account has mushroomed from $2,200 to nearly $1 million.
What did Gary discover on that fateful day in 1985? How did he achieve his phenomenal fifteen-year winning streak and earn an international reputation as one of the most successful home-based traders ever? Find out in How I Trade for a Living. What you won’t find in How I Trade for a Living are knotty mathematical formulas, complex technical indicators, heavy charts, or elaborate software demands. What you will find is a simple, straightforward approach to home-based trading that can be used by virtually anyone, anywhere. Unlike most “experts” writing today, Gary Smith has actually made it as a home-based trader.
Step by step, Smith outlines his low-risk trading strategies and explains how to use them to trade stock index futures and mutual funds-his preferred vehicles-as well as individual stocks, options, futures, and junk bonds. He acquaints you with his favorite indicators and tells you how to get the most out of them. He offers a wealth of tips on recognizing market trends and riding them for all they’re worth. You’ve heard what the “experts” have to say about trading the markets. Now find out how it’s really done from a consummate pro in How I Trade for a Living. –This text refers to the hardcover edition.

About the author
Gary Smith
How I Trade For a Living, my final book, came out in October 1999. That was a few months prior to the markets’ multi-year collapse, which was mostly caused by the technology sector disaster. Many traders believed I was a one-hit wonder who would never be heard from again because a large portion of my success in the 1990s came from riding the technological wave. However, that hasn’t happened. I have made a lot more money in the 21 years since the publication of How I Trade For a Living than I did in the 1980s and 1990s.
However, swing trading technology funds and other sector equity funds, or daytrading stock index futures, have not contributed to my profitability since 2000. Rather, trading trash corporate, junk municipal, emerging markets, and securitized bond mutual funds has been the source of it.
Since 2009, the most profitable years have been the past 12 years. I made nearly $2,700,000 over that time through June 2021, with a drawdown of less than 1%. That’s a long way from my original investment of $2200 in the spring of 1985, and it averages out to about $225,000 a year. It simply illustrates the strength of the compound effect, which is the process of steadily and continuously increasing one’s capital over time.
My interest in bond funds stems from their low volatility and ability to maintain trends over extended periods of time. I have consistently advocated for traders to identify their own trading niche. Using the same momentum indicators I used while trading stock index futures and equity, I discovered my in bond funds.

One of the rare publications authored by a man with experience
Although there are many trading books available, this one is particularly meaningful to me. Why? It was written by a man who spent many years trying to make it, who finally broke through the profit zone after 19 years of hitting a brick wall. More significantly, it was authored by a person with a verified trading account whose performance over the years demonstrates the power of compounding. I have no idea who else has such validated outcomes!
This book is the account of a real trader who makes a career from trading and who discovered the key to success: learning from bad deals and establishing specific goals (Smith’s was to be successful each month) while putting aside the desire to get wealthy quickly. He went from break-even land to exceptional profitability after those events. Without using any computer charts, Smith was able to trade the S&P futures contract (full size) intra-day over the phone on a $2200 account (I wonder how many traders could do that today?). After accumulating a decent six-figure account, he started trading mutual funds in swings.
