About the Author
Dave Landry has been actively involved in the financial markets since the early 1990s. In 1995, he founded Sentive Trading, LLC (d/b/a davelandry.com), a trading and consulting firm. Landry is the author of several influential trading books, including Dave Landry on Swing Trading (2000), Dave Landry’s 10 Best Swing Trading Patterns & Strategies (2003), and The Layman’s Guide to Trading Stocks (2010).
His work has been translated into multiple languages, including Russian, Italian, French, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese. Landry has contributed articles to publications such as Technical Analysis of Stocks & Commodities, Active Trader, and Traders Journal-Singapore, and has appeared on television. He has been providing daily web-based commentary on technical trading since 1997 and has spoken at both national and international trading conferences. Landry holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and an MBA. He was a registered Commodity Trading Advisor (CTA) from 1995 to 2009 and is a member of the American Association of Professional Technical Analysts.

Mr. Chips – Very good strategies
For beginners, the sheer number of patterns, indicators, and oscillators can be overwhelming. Initially, every tool seems promising, but after a few losses, traders often feel lost and unsure which indicators to rely on.
This book emphasizes strategies first, placing indicators and oscillators in a supporting role. As a beginner technical trader navigating a confusing array of tools, applying these strategies helped me start making consistent gains. While the book may feel a bit thin and the text and figures are large, its practical guidance is invaluable. One minor critique is the lack of candlestick usage, which I find more intuitive than bar charts. Overall, the book has been very helpful.

After applying the strategies from The Layman’s Guide to Trading Stocks, I turned to this book for more insights. Landry offers a treasure trove for swing traders, explaining persistent pullback strategies triggered by trend knockouts on momentum stocks. The setups, entries, profit-taking, and exits are clearly outlined, making them easy to follow.
I particularly appreciate Landry’s writing style—straightforward and full of practical wisdom accumulated over decades. The setups are effective for both long and short trades, and as Landry says, “they slide faster than they glide.” This is an excellent resource for identifying and executing trades on intermediate trends.
