Becoming Rich: The Wealth-Building Secrets of the World’s Master Investors Buffett, Icahn, Soros
by Mark Tier (Author)
Warren Buffett, Carl Icahn, and George Soros each began with modest means—yet went on to build billion-dollar fortunes purely through investing. While their individual methods differ dramatically, what could they possibly share in common?
As Mark Tier reveals in this thought-provoking book, the common thread lies in a unique set of mental habits and disciplined strategies that all three investors follow without exception. These approaches often run counter to conventional Wall Street wisdom. For instance:
-
Buffett, Icahn, and Soros avoid broad diversification. When they invest, they commit heavily.
-
Their focus isn’t on the immediate profits. In fact, their initial motivation is not monetary gain.
-
They reject the belief that big rewards require big risks—prioritizing capital preservation above all else.
-
They rarely, if ever, read Wall Street research reports. Buffett even jokes that analyst reports are only useful when he needs a laugh.
Becoming Rich allows you to compare your own investing mindset with those of these legendary figures—and then shows you how to adopt their wealth-building habits to improve your own results.
Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
Unlike quick-profit schemes, this book focuses on the long-term mindset of the world’s most successful investors. Tier, founder of the World Money Analyst newsletter, dissects the philosophies, decision-making processes, and strategies of self-made billionaires like Buffett, Icahn, and Soros. An Australian based in Hong Kong, Tier draws on his previous works (Understanding Inflation, The Nature of Market Cycles) but here centers entirely on the investing behaviors of what he calls “Master Investors.”
Part biography, part practical guide, the book appeals most to dedicated investors who treat investing as a serious pursuit. Chapters such as “The Seven Deadly Investment Sins” and “You Call That a Position?” are as entertaining as they are instructive, while the appendix “The 23 Winning Investment Habits” distills their methods into actionable rules. Tier emphasizes that while losing investors aim to “make a lot of money,” master investors make the protection of capital their number one priority.
From the Author
Becoming Rich is the U.S. hardcover edition of The Winning Investment Habits of Warren Buffett & George Soros. Aside from the title, the content is the same.
While researching this book, I studied two highly successful investors closely, testing my conclusions against their actual habits. I expected them to dismiss my findings, but instead they examined each of the 23 Winning Investment Habits in detail, comparing them to their own practices. One even adjusted his exit strategy based on my analysis—a compliment I never anticipated.
By contrast, novice investors I interviewed often failed to apply the insights. One young investor, “Henry,” had decent but unimpressive results, and though he found the manuscript “interesting,” it did not lead to meaningful changes in his approach.
Some critics of the original edition accused it of being a “psychological attack” on aspiring traders. My point, however, was simple: trading carries relentless pressure, increasing the likelihood of errors and burnout. Soros himself stepped away from active trading for this reason—yet later returned during the 2008 crisis, steering his Quantum Fund to a 30% gain while most of Wall Street suffered heavy losses.
Why write the book? Because I’m a writer at heart, and writing is my way of learning. Identifying these 23 habits made me realize my own investing problem was not knowledge but mindset. By changing my mental habits, I reached the point where my investments cover all my living expenses—giving me the freedom to spend my days as I choose.
