Book Description
Mergers and Acquisitions in the 1990s: Insights and Quantitative Research
It is now widely recognized that mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity occurs in cyclical waves. The fifth takeover wave of the 1990s was marked by an extraordinary surge in corporate restructurings, including mergers, acquisitions, public-to-private deals, spin-offs, divestitures, and leveraged recapitalizations. After the stock market crash in March 2000, M&A activity sharply declined, but by the second half of 2004, deal-making picked up again, sparking speculation about the beginning of a sixth wave.
The 1990s wave was notable for both its scale and geographic reach. For the first time, Continental European companies participated at levels comparable to their US and UK counterparts. This unprecedented activity in Europe, along with the financial implications of the fifth wave, has led to extensive academic research.
This volume compiles a selection of leading papers by international experts, addressing topics such as:
- M&A regulation and policy implications
- Cyclical patterns in M&A markets and their drivers
- Methods for assessing M&A success and performance
- Cross-border transactions and international deals
- Payment structures and their effects on outcomes
- Hostile takeovers and high-leverage acquisitions
- Delistings and leveraged recapitalizations
Key Features:
- Curates the latest quantitative research on global M&A activity
- Contributions from a distinguished group of international authors
- Offers practical insights and implications for finance professionals
